When looking after people’s loved ones, you take extra care to ensure they are safe and protected. When those loved ones are elders requiring specialized care, ensuring they feel safe without making security overbearing is a key consideration. Add in the changing demands caused by lessons from a global pandemic and you have a unique set of challenges.  This was the situation facing Parker at its Somerset location, a 120-bed post-acute rehabilitation and skilled-nursing home. Its elders have a variety of needs—from long-term care to short-term post-illness rehabilitation. As a result, they need a flexible solution combining easy, intuitive access control for some and secure wander management for others

With an acre-sized canopy of solar panels on the roof that provide shade and harvest solar power, a geothermal heating and cooling system, a 40,000-gallon rainwater harvesting system and a green roof planted with native species, the four-story, 160,000-square-foot building aspires to be among the largest Net-Zero energy buildings in the United States. Employing smart building features The Bloomberg Center harnesses lighting controls, occupancy sensors, security, and other intelligent controls to minimize energy usage while fulfilling occupants' needs. The building contains hundreds of door closers, locks and exit devices manufactured by SARGENT.

As UWL continues to explore opportunities to better serve its increasingly diverse student population, it has designated restrooms in several buildings as gender neutral. The challenge centered on how to ensure occupants could quickly and easily determine whether restroom doors were locked or unlocked and whether the space was occupied or vacant.
