American University in Cairo
The core of the dome is open to the sky, creating a vertical air corridor. Nearly 7,000 undergraduates from Egypt and from one hundred countries around the world attend AUC. Not only does the university boast the largest English-language library in Egypt, but the AUC Press is the leading publisher of English-language books in the Arab world.
Capturing the spirit of Egypt's rich cultural heritage, the co-architects - Sasaki and Associates and Abdel-Halim Community Development Collaborative - used the desert depression to their advantage in the facility's design. This U.S.-accredited university highlights a main entrance featuring an intricate series of arches and domes modeled after the Great Mosque in Cordoba, Spain.
