"Panic" Button for Classroom Lock Remotely Secures Doors During Emergencies at Schools and Universities

On the surface, a school’s mission seems quite clear – to teach, to nurture, to educate. Whether it’s an elementary school, a high school or a university, all are places where students are free to explore and learn about the world around them. The tools needed for a school to be successful seem rather obvious: teachers, books, and chalkboards, just to name just a few. But just as important is a safe and secure environment.

SARGENT couples innovative access control technologies with practical applications to address the needs of many types of facilities, including schools. Yet, until they’re needed, our solutions should not be top of mind for everyday users.

A specific example of innovation combined with practical application is our radio frequency (RF) fob with panic button. Used with electronic locks, the panic button quickly locks the door from almost anywhere inside the classroom to prevent entry by intruders. A light on the inside of the lock indicates the door is secure and provides peace of mind for teachers and staff.

The Profile Series v.G1.5 from SARGENT offers panic button functionality. This solution provides the educational community with faster reaction times and easy operation in the confusion of an emergency, both of considerable value when children are at risk.

Key benefits of panic button functionality:

  • Locks the door from up to 75 feet away inside the room
  • Saves critical seconds in securing a classroom;
  • Eliminates the need to approach the door or enter the hallway;
  • Disables user credentials to ensure only proper authorities can access the room
  • Provides peace of mind
  • The door stays locked even if fob is pressed repeatedly;
  • An interior indicator flashes red to show the door is in lockdown;
  • Maintains a safe environment
  • Always allows free egress from the inside
Simple and effective, the Sargent standalone locks with RF panic button functionality combine innovative technology with practical application. Developed with the education community in mind, they enable easy everyday access to classrooms, and also provide extra assurance in life-threatening emergencies.

SARGENT Showcases K-12 School Security Options

Today, school administrators and facility managers are responsible not only for their students’ education, but also with providing a safe and secure learning environment. Unauthorized individuals must be kept out of the building while students and staff can move freely about. While there are many factors that contribute to a safe learning environment, appropriate door hardware is a critical element.

To help schools understand the options available to them, SARGENT has developed materials that detail those options and how we can help. Check out this page for more information.

SARGENT Passport 1000 P1 Power over Ethernet (PoE) Lock Wins Green Solutions Award at ISC West 2012

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, April 11, 2012 — Sargent Manufacturing Company, an ASSA ABLOY Group company, today announced that its Passport 1000 P1 Power over Ethernet (PoE) Lock won the Green Solutions Award in the Security Industry Association’s (SIA) 2012 New Products Showcase (NPS) at ISC West. The P1 is an integrated lock that re-uses existing network infrastructure to connect to the access control system completely eliminating the need for any additional access control wiring or components. The IP-enabled lock also leverages an existing Local Area Network (LAN) for both power and data, eliminating the need for any additional power supply or electrical wiring.

We are honored that our SARGENT Passport 1000 P1 lock has been recognized with the first ever NPS Green Solutions Award from the SIA,” said Aaron Smith, director of sustainable building solutions, ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions. “The P1 exemplifies our commitment to creating a new generation of energy-efficient, sustainable access control products and to supporting green building technologies. When the total Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a PoE system is considered, the result is less energy and material used during manufacturing, shipping, installation and use. The P1 is a best in class solution for the high performance demanded by today's green and energy efficient buildings.”

The P1’s use of a facility’s existing IEEE 802.3af PoE infrastructure streamlines the installation process, reduces costs and components, enables real-time communication and minimizes power consumption. With a maximum power consumption of 7 watts per activation at each lock, the P1 uses 50% less power than traditional access control solutions using PoE. It also uses significantly less power in standby than traditional access control. Across the hundreds of locks used within a building and over several years, this has a tremendous impact on overall power consumption. In addition, the P1 is now available with the enhanced security of HID® iCLASS® 13.56 MHz smart card technology. The SARGENT Passport 1000 P1 is available in a variety of configurations and finishes.

SARGENT MANUFACTURING WINS 2010 CONNECTICUT GREEN BUSINESS AWARD

NEW HAVEN, CT, March 8, 2010 - SARGENT Manufacturing Company (www.sargentlock.com), an ASSA ABLOY Group company and a market leader in locksets, cylinders, door closers, and related products, announced that the company is a recipient of a 2010 Connecticut Green Business Award from Business New Haven magazine.  The Green Business Awards are given to "the business and business leaders driving Connecticut's green revolution."  More than 25 companies, organizations and exceptional people from across the state are honored.

The company was recognized in the "Co-generation" category for its Combined Heat and Power (CHP) effort, also known as cogeneration, which is the use of an internal combustion engine to simultaneously generate both electricity and useful heat.  SARGENT made good use of existing machinery and participated in a state government energy conservation program to not only save money for its energy use but also to reduce its carbon footprint.

CHP systems are extremely efficient because they capture the excess heat that would be wasted by a conventional power plant.  They approach efficiencies of 90% compared to 40% for a typical power plant.  This means that less fuel needs to be consumed to produce the same amount of useful energy.

The SARGENT CHP system utilizes a previously idle internal combustion engine from a consolidated factory in the Americas division. The turbocharged, 800 horsepower, natural gas engine drives a 535-kilowatt generator.  The generator will supply 20% of the SARGENT facility’s electricity.

The exhaust of the engine flows through a waste heat boiler and the boiler makes steam for processes, heating and cooling.  Fuel for the existing boilers is thereby reduced.  The engine jacket water cooling system flows through a heat exchanger to preheat the water supplied to the boilers.  The engine oil cooling system then flows through a second heat exchanger to provide hot water to the finishing processes.

“The cost of the project was greatly reduced and made possible by using the rebuilt engine,” said SARGENT Product Service Profit Center General Manager Gary Gionet.   “The project also qualified for a $250,000 state government grant.”  Annual savings are expected to be in the low six figures based on the current price of natural gas, oil and electricity and pay for itself within two years.  Also, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced annually and the carbon footprint of the facility is lowered.

On February 24, the winners, including SARGENT, will be honored at a special ceremony at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Science.

SARGENT MANUFACTURING CAPTURES TWO GOOD DESIGN AWARDS

NEW HAVEN, CT, January 27, 2010 – SARGENT Manufacturing Company (www.sargentlock.com) a market leader in locksets, exit devices, door closers, access control locks and related products, has been recognized by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies as a 2009 GOOD DESIGN Award winner.

SARGENT was recognized in two separate categories.  The company's Harmony Series Access Control System was a winner in the Protective Equipment Category, while its MX Lever was cited in the Hardware Category.  The Harmony Series integrated Wiegand product combines lockset with proximity or iCLASS card reader in a small attractive package.  The MX lever, part of the Studio Collection of designer levers for the company’s institutional grade hardware, marries elegant form with functionality to meet many jurisdictions’ requirements for return-to-door levers.

Founded in Chicago in 1950 by architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition upon the world’s most prominent designers and manufacturers for advancing new, visionary, and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for "stretching the envelope beyond what is considered basic product and consumer design."  Now in its 60th year, GOOD DESIGN is the oldest and the most prestigious Awards Program organized worldwide.

Submissions to the program are judged by a jury of distinguished design professionals and leading industry specialists and design press on criteria established in the original 1950 program for the highest aesthetic in terms of innovative design, new technologies, form, materials, construction, concept, function, utility, and energy efficiency, and sensitivity to the environment.

"To be among the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial product designs in the world is an honor; to be recognized in two categories is indescribable," said Dan Nash, general manager of SARGENT Manufacturing.  "While we are proud of the award, we are even prouder of the fact that we are clearly providing our clients with some of the most well-designed and manufactured products available on the market."

As with all award winners, the awarded products and graphics are accessioned into the Museum's Permanent Design Collection.

The Profile Series v.S1 combines the security of SARGENT ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 exit devices, bored and mortise locks with open-standard, technology-forward IEEE 802.3af networking.  This fully integrated and online access control lock ties into a building’s existing local area network, or LAN, enabling the user to monitor a facility’s hardware from a third-party access control system.

With the v.S1, important security tasks - interrogation of lock hardware, changing user profiles, identifying possible security breaches and issuing lockdowns - can all be completed from a centralized location.  However, this “smart lock” is not dependent on the network and can provide access control even if the network is unavailable.

No proprietary equipment or power supply is required for system installation, resulting in reduced costs and faster commission.  The v.S1 offers dual credentialing (125 kHz prox and keypad) or prox only, and can store up to 2,000 users per lock.

The door status monitoring function allows the system administrator to remotely query door position (open/closed).  In addition, included sensors enable immediate alarms, such as Forced Door and Unauthorized Access Attempts, allowing appropriate security steps to be taken. What’s more, should a critical situation arise, the v.S1 can respond immediately to a lockdown command, while free egress is maintained at all times.

An attractive feature is the fact that the v.S1 is capable of “local” decision-making: the lock maintains a copy of the user database inside, ensuring that an “access granted/access denied” decision can be made right from the lock’s internal database.  In addition, the v.S1 is capable of locally storing 10,000 events. Both are important benefits in the event of a network outage.

The v.S1 also helps the user realize significant cost reduction through the elimination of power supplies, integration of card reader and monitoring sensors into the lock, and reduced labor due to faster installation times.

Available in exit device, cylindrical and mortise lock configurations, the Profile Series v.S1 is aesthetically complemented with SARGENT Studio Collection or Coastal Series levers.  MicroShield® antimicrobial finish is also available for maximum user safety.

SARGENT Announces Power over Ethernet Access Control Solution

Simple, secure, on-line access control.
The Profile Series v.S1 brings the power of your network to your door hardware. An ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 lock utilizing Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, the v.S1 connects to the building’s Ethernet network, and can make decisions locally. Non-proprietary cable, PoE switches and midspans allow easy and cost-effective installations. Real-time door status monitoring and lockdown capable, the v.S1 is available in exit device, mortise and cylindrical lock configurations.

SARGENT Presents the Gramercy Series Designer Levers

SARGENT is proud to announce a new series of Studio Collection levers:
the Gramercy Series. These new levers come in polished or satin
stainless steel, with six styles from which to choose.

Many of these levers have textural inserts, including leather, wood, metal
and Santoprene™. They can be used with exit devices, tubular and mortise
locks, access control and electromechanical products and master key
systems, consistent with other Studio Collection series.

SARGENT Adds iCLASS® Compatibility to Harmony Series

The Harmony Series of online integrated Wiegand access control products now supports HID 13.56 MHz iCLASS, as well as 125 kHz prox credentials.

iCLASS technology offers enhanced security through encryption and mutual authentication. All radio frequency data transmission between the card and reader is encrypted using a secure algorithm. By using industry standard encryption techniques, iCLASS reduces the risk of compromised data or duplicated cards.

Ordered as Harmony Series H2, exit device, mortise and cylindrical hardware is available. Other benefits of Harmony include:

  • Open architecture platform compatible with all popular access control systems
  • Reduces installation time by 50%
  • - Requires only one cable run from the lock to the access control panel
  • - Maintains architectural integrity around the door
  • - Fewer discrete components to install than traditional access control
  • Direct Wiegand output eliminates need for interface panel
  • No special credentials needed; works with your facility's prox or iCLASS cards
  • Fewer terminations result in improved reliability
